Not to be confused with the actual Camarena family. I've heard the Camarena family sold their name rights to the brand who produced this underwhelming tequila. About 15 years or so ago, when I knew a lot less about Tequila, I used to use this tequila to make Bloody Maria's and Margaritas. I recently revisited this tequila and got a very thin mouthful and a chemical taste and artificial taste that brings "vanilla windex" to mind. For the right person, who is just trying to catch a buzz, this could be an acceptable mixer. For the person trying to sip, this is absolutely undrinkable.

NOM 1456 | Not good, not bad, just exists. I don’t get any distinguishable agave on the nose or tongue so what’s the point?! Weak finish.

NOM 1456 | Mexican release. Label says NOM# 1456. However, more likely from #1596. Nose: First impression is a medicinal note, or bandaids. It improves some with a little time, bringing forth vanilla, mild baking spices and some earthiness. Flavor: Little to zero agave. Funky sweet/ bitter note that I found in the blanco. These bottles say NOM 1456, but taste suspiciously like they are from NOM 1596, home to a diffuser. Finishes with generally off putting flavors, and saccharine.

NOM 1456 | Straight progression from the blanco but softens the more aggressive elements of that expression. Agave and barrel spice with notes of oak and some alcohol.

NOM 1456 | Agave, pepper and a hint of vanilla. This one has a bit of a bite with a modest finish. The low price makes it tempting for mixer.

NOM 1456 | Aroma: Caramel, antiseptic, and slight smoke. Flavor: smooth and mellow. Finish: initially smooth, then slight astringent on the low sides of the tongue, a nice tingle in the front of the mouth and upper rear/mid sides of the tongue, a small burn low in the throat. Priced low. Put it in your margaritas.

Easy to drink with no sweet aftertaste. It's very smooth for its price class. I prefer a minor alcohol taste rather than too sweet. Sippable straight out of the bottle.

For a budget tequila, I was pleasantly surprised. I find it to be a good sipper for the price. I find the agave flavor comes through well, with no artificial sweetness, and just enough oak. The finish is a bit flat unfortunately.

Review #188 - Familia Camarena Tequila Reposado

A pretty good value brand that can be easily found. All good things. Let's see if the tequila is tops for the under $20 category because there's getting to be lots of competition in that area of the tequila shelf...and that's a good thing.
