Aroma: Cinnamon, cardamom, allspice, dried apricot, dried cherry, and oak. Complex but well-integrated. Flavor: Cooked agave and vanilla bean, orange zest, cinnamon, oak, and a touch of peppermint. Texture & Finish: Full-bodied at 44% ABV with almost no burn. The finish is long and balanced. To our knowledge, this is the first tequila aged in an ex-cherry bitters barrel. The cherry comes through as dried fruit. It’s present but not dominant and compliments the vanilla, cinnamon, and oak without overpowering the agave character.
Very tasty! Up until now I had only sampled some of the small batch projects, so I was curious about the blended standard release. It’s excellent. Lovely fresh fruity and floral aroma. Palate opens light and agave forward, then some fruit and a reveal of oaky reposado notes with some barrel spice and black pepper on the finish. The fruity notes remind me of lychee from my days traveling to China—rose, pear, grape.
Another excellent release! Feels like they are making some nice refinements with newer batches.
The Rioja cask absolutely shines on the nose, rich dried fruits, dark cherries, and wine soaked oak. The agave takes a subtle backseat. On the palate, cooked agave makes its presence known, through continued notes of dried fruit and wine influence. The barrel is impressive but not overpowering. The finish lingers with warm cooked agave, a gentle peppery finish. Another win from the Ensueno Team!!
