Number Juan Extra Añejo
“Number Juan Extra Anejo is what you would expect from an additive heavy celebrity tequila. It is made for Ron White and costs around $100. The nose is pleasant with an instant artificial sugar note like vanilla frosting. You get caramel, and brown sugar at first, but that quickly is overpowered by a strong ethanol burn. The tasting notes start off with a strong ethanol bite with a fair amount of heat and pepper. The softer notes then quickly present themselves with cake batter, vanilla frosting, and taste very strongly of artificial additive sweeteners. There is a distinct lack of agave in the nose or flavor. The heavier notes then take over which are mostly charred wood, medium smoke, pepper, and heat. There is a bitter finish with a thick sweetness that coats the mouth and makes the bitterness linger. For a $100 extra anejo, I would hope for more depth of flavor, less bite, and more agave. Instead you end up with an artificial tasting sweet and syrupy tequila that lacks agave notes, and is heavy on tart wood notes. ”

Ocho Tequila Reposado
“El Tigre starts with a nice nose, probably the strength of this tequila. You get grilled pineapple, vanilla, cream, and roasted agave, though it ends with a very sharp ethanol burn. The initial flavor is a very smooth Reposado. Next you get more of the roasted agave, pineapple, grass, brine, and mineral notes. The softer notes then come in with banana, and vanilla. The flavor then begins to turn bitter like taking a bite out of a burnt agave plant or a heavily charred marshmallow. You get a bitter charcoal flavor, which is followed by a sour note like taking a bite out of a grapefruit peel. The finish is quite hot, and peppery with a lingering bitterness. I would say for an additive free tequila around $60 a bottle that is easy to find it’s worth a taste, but I’m not sure if I would buy it again. There are some very nice notes of toasted agave, crushed pineapple, and vanilla, but the sour and bitter notes over power them.”

El Padrino de Mi Tierra Extra Añejo
“Strong flavors of additives. Very mild agave flavor if any, mostly overpowered by wood and added sugars. Has a nice nose of fruit woods, cherry, cinnamon, cake batter, synthetic vanilla frosting, but the taste is mostly an alcohol burn, with a very light, almost watery finish. Not a bad price for an extra anejo with very little substance. This might be enjoyable for someone who doesnt mind synthetic tasting additive flavors and is looking to save some money, but I would not buy again.”
