2024 Tierras Negras | Light spice and solid roast agave on the nose. I think that this Añejo has more pepper on the palate than some recent releases from Los Alambiques. Some wood/ humidor notes in the mouth as well. Some slight vegetal bitterness on the finish but this is really well executed with the wood notes presented but not dominant. The agave is the show stopper here, full on with some nice tongue buzz provided from the 40% juice. A long fading finish rounds out the experience.

2020 Cerro Grande | Very easy to sip. Agave is retained on the pallet which Ocho is amazing at doing.

2022 La Cañada | An excellent agave forward anejo. A stark difference between this anejo and the other two I tasted in the flight(Fortaleza & Volans). Far less barrel influence, and the color could easily pass for a Reposado. Cooked agave being the driving note here along with citrus rind, herbs, and flowers. Subtle barrel notes like vanilla and caramel, but the distillate is the star of the show.

2023 San Jerónimo | Pretty good stuff! A little more pepper and bite than the reposado. Still some really great flavors for a very light Anejo.

2021 La Ladera | Nose: agave cooked / vanilla/ caramel/ earth / cinnamon/ hint of fruit / grapefruit / tea / anise / nutmeg/ chocolate/ maple / hint of cream soda Taste: agave cooked / vanilla / pepper / earth / cinnamon/ banana/ apple/ melon / lime / orange peel / grapefruit / licorice / hay : lemongrass/ tea / basil / nutmeg/ chocolate/ maple / cream soda Finish: clean and smooth very slightly viscous mouthfeel that presents a lingering earthy, pepper, bittersweet finish. This anejo has a lot of flavors that pop out throughout the taste, but the whole experience seems to lack some harmonious blend. It could stand to have some more agave sweetness to add balance or it would need a way to tone down the earthy bitters that are the biggest part of the finish. Overall it’s darn good.

2023 Mesa Colorada | This is a great agave forward anejo with light notes from the barrel coming through to the nose and the palate. A very enjoyable sipper. Nose: cooked agave, oak, vanilla, black pepper, caramel, cinnamon, and citrus. Palate: the nose really carries through to the palate. Cooked agave, oak, vanilla, black pepper, caramel, cinnamon, and citrus. A very good balanced anejo that still has a great presence of cooked agave with light barrel notes.

2022 La Estancia Nose: Wood from the start. Oak, walnut and a little maple. Melds into vanilla cooked agave. Mild pepper, citrus, and dried fruit. Cherry and red fruits. Palate: Silky smooth mouth feel. Slight tingle on the tip of my tongue. Dry oak, cooked agave and gentle vanilla on the front palate. Fruit and citrus come into the mid palate with cherry, plum, tropical fruits and lime. Finish is dry, long and encourages me to take another sip. Absolutely love this pour from Ocho. Fantastic value at $70 with deep beautiful flavor without any additives. Definitely worth trying!

2019 La Laja | Old town, Tequila single barrel at 52.5%. Barrel number six. Pretty incredible all around. Aroma is OK a little subdued. The taste is an explosion of pepper and agave. The heat is ran. The finishes long and nice.

2021 La Ladera | The aromatic journey mirrors the refreshing minerality and cooked agave notes found in the blanco, accompanied by subtle hints of light caramel and almonds. Notably absent is any harsh ethyl, rendering the presentation entirely fresh and inviting. The tasting experience begins with a gentle peppery heat that gracefully transitions into the back of the throat, mingling with delicious minerality, cooked agave, and a faint hint of candied yam. Subtle nuances of minute mint, distinct alcohol, creamy dark chocolate, and a whisper of whiskey add complexity, creating a pleasant tapestry of flavors. The finish is characterized by a mild yet lingering presence of cooked agave, minerality, whiskey, and a touch of freshness. Moments later, the palate is left with a pleasant sensation of salivation. This tequila stands as a masterpiece of simplicity, offering a nearly gourmand experience.

2015 La Latilla | My rating is from a small screw top sample that I’ve had for a while. The nose is spicy with wood tannins but there’s a sweet undertone. There’s some dense cooked agave and baking spices. The finish is both sweet and spicy.

2021 La Mula | Aromas: A terrific nose. Warm and inviting agave notes. A touch of cedar. Nutmeg, cinnamon, orange peel. Almond pastry and mellow black pepper. Flavor: A surprise hit of pepper. Sweetness and saltiness in equal measure. A tiny bit thin in the mouth. Again, almonds appear, now more similar to those found in a praline. This starts to really pull together as it opens up. Agave galore. A nice follow up to their Plata and Repo.

2017 Las Aguilas | A friend held this for several Covid years and I finally had a chance to retrieve it from their possession. This has a synthetic cork and it didn’t fit as well as others have. On the multi stage trip home the bottle leaked a bit inside the airbag in the suitcase. The cork glue melted and came apart when removing lol. The Añejo inside this bottle, #2992, is some of the best I’ve tasted from any brand in recent memory. Agave and barrel spice on the nose gives way to stone fruit some melon and roast agave. A moderate length finish with lingering sweetness rounds this out.

Review #315 - Tequila Ocho (2010 Los Corrales) Tequila Plata Blanco

If you are someone who likes a blanco that is not overly sweet and you crave an up front agave flavor, this is a tequila that you will really enjoy.
